Dear Tim: It is not unusual to hear some engine when first starting on a cold start. The sound can either be from a hydraulic valve lifter, or piston-to-cylinder wall clearance. As the engine warms, the clearances change and get tighter and noises will usually disappear. The noise may not occur again for weeks.

Why does my Nissan Altima make a noise when I start it?

Problem Description The cause of the noise is faulty timing chain guide rails and timing chain tensioners that wear out well ahead of schedule. These components are there to keep the timing chain tight and properly positioned.

How do I cold start my Nissan Altima?

Cold Weather Starting Tips

  1. Press the accelerator pedal down approximately 1/3 of the way to the floor.
  2. Hold the accelerator pedal in this position while cranking the engine.
  3. Once the engine has started release the accelerator pedal.
  4. If the engine does not start within 15 seconds, stop cranking, wait at least 10 seconds.

Why is it quieter when it’s cold?

Because sound moves faster in warm air than colder air, the wave bends away from the warm air and back toward the ground. That’s why sound is able to travel farther in chilly weather. Snow absorbs sound, thereby muffling all the little noises you’d ordinarily hear reverberating off of the ground.

Is it normal for a car to make noise when starting?

So, what is that grinding noise you hear when starting a car? Most likely, if it is true grinding that you hear, the problem is related to the starter. Causes include the starter not lining up correctly with the ring gear on the flywheel, missing or damaged gear teeth, or a faulty solenoid.

Why is noise louder at night?

The heating from the day will heat the entire atmosphere. At night, the atmosphere always cools from the ground up. When we have a thunderstorm at night, sound bounces off of that warm layer and has nowhere else to go but down and to our ears. This is why it’s much louder at night.

Why is my car rattling when I start it?

If the rattling noise occurs when the car is stationary the origin is in the engine/transmission and/or exhaust system. If the identical rattle occurs when the car is moving, too, motor mounts or loose exhaust system components are a possibility.

Why does the intake cam make a rattling noise?

I’ve searched the forum and found a couple of suggestions. One is that the VTC gear on the intake cam is making the noise and the other is that the cam chain tensioner is slow in filling with oil (i.e. hydraulic pressure) and it is causing the noise. Sometimes it rattles when we first start it and other times it does not.

Why does my car idle at a higher rpm in cold weather?

When you start the car it ide’s from 600rpm to 1500rpm when its cold it goes to 1900rpm then back to 600 it seems to be more irattic in the cold weather? Possible vacuum leak. Use a non-flammable spray on to underhood vacuum hoses when idling.

Why does my V6 engine make a clattering noise?

Possibly low on oil will make the top end of the V6 makes some clattering noises for a bit I’ve heard, not sure about the 2.5L. Check it out after it sits for at least an hour. 2.5’s do have that issue as well after the oil settles.
