Dear Tim: It is not unusual to hear some engine when first starting on a cold start. The sound can either be from a hydraulic valve lifter, or piston-to-cylinder wall clearance. As the engine warms, the clearances change and get tighter and noises will usually disappear. The noise may not occur again for weeks.

When you start the car it ide’s from 600rpm to 1500rpm when its cold it goes to 1900rpm then back to 600 it seems to be more irattic in the cold weather? Possible vacuum leak. Use a non-flammable spray on to underhood vacuum hoses when idling.
