The lovely town of Culross, in Fife, in has been used in several Outlander episodes. The town is owned by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) who have been instrumental in helping preserve the town’s historical buildings, many dating to the 18th century.
Why is Culross a Royal Burgh?
The Royal Burgh Culross was an important religious centre as early as the 6th century. The monks mined coal, and over the next centuries the small town became a centre for the coal trade, so much so that the Culross chalder became the standard Scottish unit of measure for weighing coal.

Review of The Jigger Inn. Lovely view of The Old Course, Semi dog friendly! Love this pub, special place over looking The Old Course and absolutely great on the dry sunny days. Such a shame dogs aren’t allowed inside as we would have gone down in the evening as well.

The West Kirk, near Culross, is the site of the Benedictine abbey, the Black Kirk. In “The Way Out” the Black Kirk is blamed for Tammas Baxter’s illness, the villagers believing him to be possessed after visiting the kirk.

There are cobbled streets throughout the town. Culross Palace, Study and Town House are unsuitable for visitors with limited mobility due to uneven surfaces and spiral staircases, but the palace garden may be suitable, with difficulty, for wheelchairs. We have an ongoing programme of accessible content development.
