The walk starts at the source in Kemble and ends at the Thames Barrier just after Greenwich. We have divided the route into four sections so you can complete the route over a few holidays if you don’t have the time to walk it in one go. The Thames starts as a small trickle just outside Kemble.
How long does the Thames Path take?

The Trail is 184 miles (294 Km) long. As a guide, using roughly 15 miles/24 Km a day as an average daily walking distance, the Trail can be completed in 14 days allowing for a couple of days’ rest.
Can you walk the whole Thames Path?
Thanks to good paths, the vast majority of the Thames Path can be walked all year round.
Is Thames Path muddy?
A sometimes muddy walk to the source of the Thames. Although flat and navigationally generally undemanding this walk does have its challenges. There are however some parts of the walk, particularly between Reading and Oxford which are pretty featureless and can be dull.

Where does the Thames Path go in London?
The path passes the Wetlands Centre on the left passing under Hammersmith bridge into Barnes, then on to Kew, passing the famous Royal Botanical Gardens and Kew Palace on the left. Across the river there are views to Syon Park and Syon House. The Thames Path continues past The Old Deer Park to Richmond Lock and on into Richmond.
Are there any toll bridges on the River Thames?
Swinford Bridge a bit further downstream, built in 1770, is one of only two remaining toll bridges on the Thames but it’s free to pedestrians wanting to visit Eynsham. There can be no better way to enter the lovely city of Oxford than to walk in from the Trout at Godstow north on the Thames Path.
