Why is doubtless bay called Doubtless Bay?

Doubtless Bay was named by Captain James Cook during his first voyage of Pacific exploration in 1769. When Cook sailed past the entrance to the area, he recorded in his journal “doubtless a bay”, hence the name.

Who is Coopers Beach named after?

Around twenty years later, whalers and sealers from all over the western world arrived, and called the area Coopers Beach – thought to have come from the coopers on the whaleships. The first European settler is considered to be James David Berghan from Ireland, who arrived in Mangonui in 1831.

Why is it called Cable Bay?

Cable Bay is named after the communication cable that connected New Zealand to the rest of the world for many years. Then re-named Cable Bay when the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company laid the first Cable across the Tasman from La Perous near Sydney, arriving here on 21 Feb 1876.
