Floating above an offshore natural gas field, the FLNG facility produces, liquefies, stores and transfers LNG (and potentially LPG and condensate) at sea before carriers ship it directly to markets.
When did the first floating liquefaction facility begin operations?
PFLNG 1 operations PFLNG 1 started production from the Kanowit gas field in December 2016 and loaded its first cargo in April 2017. The FLNG facility was relocated to Kebabangan field, offshore Sabah, Malaysia in March 2019.

Why do we float LNG?
FLNG technology offers countries a more environmentally-sensitive way to develop natural gas resources. Prelude will have a much smaller environmental footprint than land-based LNG plants, which require major infrastructure works. It also eliminates the need for long pipelines to land.
What does Flng stand for?
Floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) technology is complementary to conventional onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) as it helps to accelerate the development of gas resources to meet the world’s growing demand.
What is an FPU offshore?
A floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit is a floating vessel used by the offshore oil and gas industry for the production and processing of hydrocarbons, and for the storage of oil. A vessel used only to store oil (without processing it) is referred to as a floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessel.
Is CNG a gas?
CNG, also known as compressed natural gas, is an eco-friendly alternative to gasoline. Made by compressing natural gas (methane) down to less than 1% of its volume, CNG fuel is safer than gasoline and diesel because it is non-toxic and does not contaminate ground water.
What is petpetronas doing with PFLNG?
Petronas has also taken the final investment decision (FID) for PFLNG 2, which is currently under construction and will be launched in 2018. PFLNG 2 will be moored at the Rotan gas field in deepwater Block H, offshore Sabah, Malaysia, and will have a capacity to annually produce 1.5 million tonnes of LNG.
What is Petronas first floating liquefied natural gas facility?
Petroliam Nasional Berhad’s (Petronas) first floating liquefied natural gas (PFLNG 1) facility, also known as PFLNG SATU, was developed for the Kanowit gas field off the coast of Sarawak in Malaysia.
Where is the floating LNG facility located in Malaysia?
The FLNG facility was relocated to Kebabangan field, offshore Sabah, Malaysia in March 2019. Kebabangan field is operated by Kebabangan Petroleum Operating Company. Petronas Floating LNG 1 (Labuan) signed an engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning contract for PFLNG 1 with TDC in June 2012.
What is the Prelude floating LNG facility?
