DTaP produces fewer side effects and is a safer version of an older vaccine called DTP, which is no longer used in the United States. Tdap vaccine is licensed for people 10 years through 64 years of age. Tdap contains a lower concentration of diphtheria and pertussis toxoids than DTaP.
When did DTP change to DTaP?
US Licensed DTaP Vaccines DTaP(3) (Infanrix, GSK) was licensed in 1997 and DTaP(5) (Daptacel, Sanofi Pasteur) in 2002. In 1997, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended that DTaP vaccines replace DTP vaccines for the first 3 doses in infants.
How is the DTaP vaccine administered?
Administer all diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis vaccines (DT, DTaP, Td, and Tdap) by the intramuscular route. The preferred injection site in infants and young children is the vastus lateralis muscle of the thigh. The preferred injection site in older children and adults is the deltoid muscle in the upper arm.
What does tdap adsorbed mean?
diphtheria toxoid/tetanus toxoid/acellular pertussis vaccine adsorbed. A vaccine containing detoxified tetanus toxoid, detoxified diphtheria toxoid and acellular pertussis antigens, adsorbed on aluminum phosphate, with active immunizing activity against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis.
Which is better DTaP vs DTwP?
There was no significant difference in the rates of local, systemic and febrile reactions between the different age groups of children who received DTwP. Conclusions: DTaP vaccines were found to have fewer local, systemic and febrile reactions than DTwP vaccines.
When did tdap become mandatory?
Tdap Vaccine Mandates for Elementary and Secondary Schools
| State | Tdap Mandate | Implementation date |
|---|---|---|
| California | Yes | SY 2011–12 |
| Colorado | Yes | SY 2007–08 |
| Connecticut | Yes | August 2011 |
| Delaware | Yes | SY 2016-17 |
Which of the following immunizations is administered IM?
Intramuscular Route (IM):
| INJECTABLE VACCINES | ROUTE |
|---|---|
| DTaP, DT, HepA, HepB, Hib, HPV, , IIV4, RIV4, ccIIV4, IPV*, MenACWY, MenB, PCV13, PPSV23*, RZV, Td, Tdap, TT | Intramuscular injection |
| IPV,* MMR, PPSV23,* VAR | Subcutaneous injection |
What if an adult gets a DTaP?
An adult who gets DTaP (higher amount of antigen) would not need to be revaccinated but would be more likely to have a sore arm at the vaccination site. But an infant/child who got Tdap would have received a lesser amount of antigen and may not respond adequately.
