Meniscocapsular separation is a relatively uncommon traumatic injury, where the meniscus is separated from the joint capsular attachments. It is more common medially than laterally, and occurs in conjunction with other traumatic injuries of the knee.
What is Meniscocapsular attachment?
The meniscocapsular ligament attaches the base of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus to the posterior joint capsule of the knee adjacent to the coronary ligament.
Why is the lateral meniscus less likely to be injured?
Larger tears that displace, and tears associated with instability, are less likely to heal. Tears in the outer 1/3 of the meniscus are more likely to heal than tears toward the inside of the meniscus because the blood supply is better in the outer region.
How do you know if you tore your lateral meniscus?
If you’ve torn your meniscus, you might have the following signs and symptoms in your knee:
- A popping sensation.
- Swelling or stiffness.
- Pain, especially when twisting or rotating your knee.
- Difficulty straightening your knee fully.
- Feeling as though your knee is locked in place when you try to move it.
Where is the Meniscofemoral ligament?
knee joint
The Posterior meniscofemoral ligament (also known as the ligament of Wrisberg) is a small fibrous band of the knee joint. It attaches to the posterior area of the lateral meniscus and crosses superiorly and medially behind the posterior cruciate ligament to attach to the medial condyle of the femur.
What to do about meniscal injuries?
Meniscus tears are among the most common knee injuries. Athletes, particularly those who play contact sports, are at risk for meniscus tears. However, anyone at any age can tear a meniscus. When people talk about torn cartilage in the knee, they are usually referring to a torn meniscus. Anatomy
How serious is a torn meniscus?
Complications. A torn meniscus can lead to knee instability, inability to move your knee normally or persistent knee pain. You might be more likely to develop osteoarthritis in the injured knee.
How a MCL injury or meniscal tear can be avoided?
How an MCL Injury or Meniscal Tear can be Avoided. The risk of many knee injuries associated with CrossFit, including meniscal tears or MCL injury, can be reduced by proper movement patterns and exercise technique and allowing adequate recovery time between workout sessions.
How painful is a torn meniscus?
Tearing the meniscus can be very painful. Injury of the inner meniscus causes pain on the inside of the knee. If the outer meniscus is torn, the pain is felt on the outside of the knee.
