After time to establish roles and leadership personnel, we find the choir boys take on two responsibilities: tending the fire, and hunting for food. These are rather adult-like roles and they demonstrate the ability to tackle the bigger tasks.

What job activity does Jack consider to be the most important?

Ralph spends all day building the shelters along with Simon, who is the only boy willing to help him. Ralph is frustrated because most of the boys prefer to play instead of work, and the remaining shelters are unstable. Jack has opposite priorities and believes that hunting is the most important activity.

Why is Jack in charge of the choir?

Jack is the head of the choir so the fact that he already has a group of dedicated followers who have become the hunters allows Ralph, Piggy and Simon to primarily organize the shelter and the signal fire.
