Farrier anvils will run anywhere from 70-150 pounds, while shop anvils typically weigh in at 150-250 pounds (or heavier). The shop anvil usually has a wider face, with more surface area to work on. The weight of the shop anvil will be concentrated more under the face and less in the horn and heel.

Hard anvil faces (HRC 58-65), of sufficient thickness, do not dent easily with the errant hammer blow; nor do they become saddle shaped, nor do they have edges that get pounded down or become rounded. Typically the bigger the anvil, the thicker should be the hardened face and 1/2” should be minimum for any anvil.
