Cooling System Performance
OBD-II Code P2181 is defined as a Cooling System Performance. The engine computer (PCM) monitors coolant temperature in the radiator (Radiator Coolant Temperature Sensor) and in the engine (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor).
What is the code for overheating?
The P0217 code means that the engine is or was overheating and should be turned off as soon as possible. Most engines have an engine coolant temperature sensor that sends a voltage reading to the powertrain control module which converts that into a temperature.
What happens if coolant temp is too high?
Hot, pressurized coolant and steam could erupt from the radiator, burning your hands. And never add cold water to an overheated engine; the abrupt temperature change can severely damage the engine. Let the engine cool down.
What does the p2181 code on a Dodge Charger mean?
The code may be seen on Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, and other models. Unlike most generic-computer fault codes that are relatively specific as to the items or area the fault occurred, code P2181 is vague to say the least. The fault is recognized and set if the engine temperature is out of range either too hot or cold.
What are the possible causes of code p2181?
Due to the wide range of possibilities for overheating as the cause of code P2181, the following strategy will be employed. The flow of diagnostics will be used from an automotive technician’s viewpoint. It will begin with the most often encountered to the least.
What does the PCM code on the coolant temperature mean?
It is triggered when the powertrain control module (PCM) detects that the coolant temperature in the radiator and engine is outside of the normal range (too hot or too cold). Unlike other DTCs that point to specific components that might be malfunctioning, this powertrain code is generic and does not include any specifics.
