U.S. Electrical Wiring Color Codes
- Phase 1 – Black.
- Phase 2 – Red.
- Phase 3 – Blue.
- Neutral – White.
- Ground – Green, Green with Yellow Stripe, or Bare Wire.
What color wire is L and N?
The N is for the neutral side or the white wire, and the L is for the load side, the black wire.
What are the wires color coding in three phase?
The USA has their own wiring colors for electrical circuits, black, red, and blue are used for 208 VAC three-phase; brown, orange and yellow are used for 480 VAC….International Wiring Color Codes.
| Ground (G) | Green |
|---|---|
| Neutral (N) | Black |
| Line 1 (L1) | Red |
| Line 2 (L2) | Yellow |
| Line 3 (L3) | Blue |
Why are wires Colour coded?
The different color coding schemes for wires are used to identify the different categories of wires from a bulk of wires. For example if same color coding is used for overall wiring then it will be difficult to identify the neutral, live or earth wire.
Does the NEC have a color code?
While the NEC does not contain a required color code for voltage marking, the industry standard is 208/120V (A) black, (B) red, (C) blue and grounded/neutral white; 480/277V (A) brown, (B) orange, (C) yellow and grounded/neutral gray. However, color-coding the outside of a wiring method is not an NEC requirement.
Are electrical wires color coded?
Electrical wires are color-coded according to purpose. Understanding the electrical wire color coding system and knowing the function of each wire is important to make sure you are using them appropriately and safely.
When color coding the B phase What color do you use?
Brown = A phase, Orange = B phase, Yellow = C phase. (BOY) is the way to remember it. These are common color combinations, but are not required by the NEC.
