The TD5 has had head cracking issues, and the problem of head gasket and gasket dowels, but most should be through this by now, you’ll just have to watch out for anything that hasn’t had the repairs done. The Dual-Mass flywheel can fail, and that is typical of ALL dual-mass flywheels, not just the TD5’s.

If you have a D2 the TD5 is turn key if you get the engine, ecu, trans, wiring,fuse block, intercooler, radiator, engine mounts ect. there are breaker kits out and many are already here in trucks registered and driving 25mpg… Why do the swap? because the 4.6 is the biggest POS ever made and the 4.0L is thirsty…
Should I replace the OE intercooler with Td5?
The fuel system will swap over easily (in theory). All said and done however, the TD5 isn’t exactly a Stellar performer, even when the POS OE intercooler is replaced and the engine re-tuned. If you have a 4.6, you will be disapointed. If you have a tired 4.0, it’ll be acceptable – probably….
Does the Td5 use 4HP24 or 4HP22?
The TD5 didn’t use the 4HP24 of the 4.6, but the 4HP22 as per the 4.0… The trans is basically the same however, so you could stick with the stronger unit, but you would need to swap the bell housing and TC for the TD5 unit.
Is the Toyota Td5 worth it?
The Td5 is a fine unit in it’s own right. But if you live in a place with affordable petrol prices (aka the USA), you’d have to be completely mental to want to swap in a Td5 over a 4.0/4.6 V8. And only marginally better on fuel.
