TLDR: crafting in the OC takes work but can be rewarding depending on your goals. It’s very difficult to keep crafting balanced between game breakingly powerful and useless. In NWN2 you can certainly make game-breaking gear, particularly if you use crafting specialised companions.

Using this craft skill requires an anvil and a Smith’s Hammer, in addition to the appropriate materials (metal ingots, wooden planks, and/or leather hides) and a mold for the desired weapon….Notes.

What is the point of craft in nwnwn?
NWN only implemented craft (trap), craft (weapon) and craft (armor) as 3 individual skills. While craft (trap) could produce reasonably useful traps, craft (weapon) and craft (armor) could only produce minor magical items after great investment. However both weapon and armor crafting were used for customizing armor appearance.
Are there any modifications to the basic crafting system in NW2?
Other modifications to the basic crafting system are available on the NWVault (suggested search: “nwn2 crafting”). n.b. The Warlock ‘s Imbue Item Feat has special considerations.
Is craftcrafting a minigame?
Crafting *is* a minigame, and one I dislike in all games where crafting is non-essential. It tends to divert your focus, and for people like me (and you, I suspect) it is overly complicated — for crafting buffs, it’s undoubtedly not complicated enough. You don’t need it; if you don’t like crafting, ignore it completely and sell that stuff.
Do you need to craft to win the game?
Short answer: if you don’t want to craft, you don’t need to. In general, crafted items will be far more powerful than the ones you find. It’s not necessary to win the game, and quite honestly it erodes at the difficulty a bit much for my liking (I’d compare it to cheating for significantly higher stats).
