Set a sharp chisel into the groove to cut the cane. Then lay a narrow bead of white glue all around the groove on top of the caning. Blot the spline dry, and force it into the groove over the caning, using a wooden or rubber mallet to drive it into the groove.
How do you measure for caning?
The size of cane to seat a chair is determined by the diameter of the holes and the distance of holes from center of one hole to the center of another hole. Measure the diameter of the holes in your chair. Then measure the distance from the center of one hole to the center of the next hole.
How do you replace caning?
It is easier to replace the caning with a different material that will withstand wear and prove less expensive.
- Upholstered Seat. A solid, fabric-covered seat is one of the sturdiest replacements for seat caning.
- Woven Belts. Secondhand leather belts are inexpensive and easy to find at thrift stores.

Do you have to soak cane webbing?
Cane Webbing and Spline need to be soaked for about 30 minutes for flexibility. If it still seems stiff, soak a bit longer. Don’t try to install cane webbing if it’s still dry enough to crack. Don’t “oversoak” your cane for long periods of time or overnight.
How much is a cane chair?
Most English chairs have between 9 and 11 holes per 6 inches so will usually need 2.0mm and 2.5mm cane, if there are more holes than this then the cane will need to be smaller, less and the cane will need to be larger.
Is it easy to replace cane?
